History
The School of Textiles & Clothing of Jiangnan University, formerly the Department of Textile Engineering of Wuxi University of Light Industry was established on the basis of the School of Textiles of Textile Engineering of Wuxi University of Light Industry and the Department of Textiles and Design of Jiangnan College. The history of the School can be traced back to 1952, when the Wuxi School of Textile Industries was established 50 years ago. Approved by the Ministry of Education, Jiangnan University, which is directly under the Ministry of Education and belongs to the national “211 Project”, was founded from the merging of Jiangnan College and Wuxi Teachers College with Wuxi University of Light Industry. It brings the development of the School of Textiles & Clothing into a new era.

Courses and Programs
The School offers a unique range of courses, covering Textile Engineering, Textile Chemical Engineering, Clothing Design and Engineering for the undergraduate program , and it is entitled to confer doctoral degree in Textile Engineering and Pulp and Paper Engineering and master’s degree in Textile Engineering, Clothing Design and Engineering, Pulp and Paper Engineering. Textile science and engineering is one of the key disciplines at Jiangnan University, supported by the “211 project”. The University has input over10 million RMB to purchase an extensive range of advanced facilities to enhance teaching and research excellence within the School. The School was listed No.4 in the national ranking of textile science and engineering.

Teaching
There are three departments within the School, including Textile Engineering, Textile Chemical Engineering and Clothing Design and Engineering. The School has set up 5 main laboratories for teaching, covering textile engineering, textile chemical engineering, clothing design and engineering and textile materials.

The School have been seeking the new strategy for providing professionally and administratively orientated courses to ensure that graduates are highly successful specialists with broadened knowledge and well trained skills in textile engineering, textile chemistry and clothing engineering, which meet the needs of talents for China's economic development under globalization. At present, the total number of full time students has reached 1700, including 1500 undergraduates, and 200 postgraduates studying for master's degrees and doctoral degrees.

Faculty
The committed members of staff are contributing excellence in teaching and research within the School, including 23 professors, 35 associate professors, 12 supervisors for Ph.D. programs and 37 supervisors for master’s programs. The faculty with doctoral and master’s degrees account for 51% of the total. This high-level academic group has laid a solid foundation for high-level personnel training, knowledge innovation, and scientific and technological creation.

Research
Focused on the solutions to ecologically environmental protection, and products of low grade and outdated technology, the School has launched various research programs in such aspects as ecological textile technology, digitized textile technology and functional textile materials. The Key Laboratory of Eco-textiles, Ministry of Education, is located in the School. During the period of the State's Tenth Five-Year Plan, the School undertook three " 863 " projects, two projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, three projects from National Key Technological Innovation Plan, thirty three other provincial-and-ministerial-level projects and 300 projects supported by industries. The total research funds have exceeded 40 million yuan in the past three years. The School has formed its own specialties in digital print, textile enzymes, and functionally nanostructured textiles digitized textile technology and significant impact at home and abroad. The School has successively obtained over 10 provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards in recent years.

The School has encouraged its teachers and students to participate in the garment design competitions at domestic and international levels, such numerous competitions as the GIFU International Student's Design Competition, the "Jeanwest " Causal Dress Competition, Young Designer Competition of " Brother's Cup ", Young Designer Competition of " Hanjing Cup", China's Garment Design of " Chinese Cup ", etc. A great deal of medals has received, which has made an effective social impact.

Academic Exchanges
The School has established sound academic exchanges and cooperation with many internationally recognized universities and institutions, such as University of Manchester, University of Leeds, University of California Davis, North Carolina State University, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Fukui University, Shinshu University, Yeungnam University, University of Georgia, Louisiana State University and German Karl Mayer Company, sending more than 20 scholars to attend international conferences, and participate in academic exchanges and joint research programs every year. The School has also accepted and trained overseas students from Republic of Korea, Taiwan other regions.
